Course Overview


The National Diploma in Animal Production with a specialisation in Pig Production is an academic online programme supported by practical hands-on modules, developed for the sub-Saharan African pig Industry. Obtaining your National Diploma (NQF 5) would conclude your two-year academic course.

 The qualification focuses on the Management of Operational Pig Production skills within the framework of the sciences of animal biology, nature conservation, regenerative production, agricultural economics and strategic and business management, supported by fundamental knowledge of the application of basic computer skills, communication, applied mathematics, agricultural engineering technology and chemistry & physics. 

The one-year National Diploma in Animal Production with a specialisation in Pig Production will enable qualifying students to actively participate and gain knowledge in primary pig production, whilst enhancing the overall agrarian process and gaining opportunities to access local, national and international agricultural markets.

Specific competency will be obtained in the specialised sub-fields of Pig Production systems, breeding systems, handling practices, classes and life functions, production norms and measurement, record keeping and performance measurement, diseases and biosecurity, handling and management practices, pig value chains and the slaughtering of pigs as well as the classification of pork, with an evenly strong focus on economic and financial management. 

On completion, students will be well-positioned to extend learning and practice into other sub-fields such as crop production, mixed farming, wildlife management and farm management.


REQUIREMENTS

The following minimum admission requirements will be required to enter for the National Diploma:

  • National Senior Certificate (Grade 12), or National Certificate (Vocational) that allows entrance to Diploma or Higher Certificate studies
  • Minimum Application Point of 20
  • English tuition language with a minimum achievement level 3 (40%)
  • Mathematical Literacy with a minimum achievement level 4 (50%), or
  • Mathematics with a minimum achievement level 2 (30%)

TRAINING METHODOLOGY

The National Diploma in Animal Production with a specialisation in Pig Production is presented as an exciting e-learning programme. This is done through self-study, reading and the online submission of assignments.
Theoretical studies are completed through our online Agri-learn platform and the student is provided with a practical logbook to achieve practical competencies and experiences in the student’s workplace. Where needed, students will be assisted towards practical competence through our work placement programme.

24 Months (After the first 12 months of completion you will obtain your certificate and within 24 months of total study time you will obtain your Diploma)
